paper mache

The recipe:
Use a LARGE mixing bowl...
8 c. warm water
6 c. flour
3 T salt (to prevent mold)
1 bottle of white glue (not completely necessary, but I like the finish of the paste with it)
Hand mix, squishing out lumps of flour.
Ripped up newspapers - just one thick edition did all our projects. I like working with strips but pieces work well too. The ripping is something all ages can be involved with.
After mixing the glue consistancy should look like this:
Balloons for forms for our dinosaur eggs...
layer newspaper dipped in glue, smooth out with hands.
We also used red plastic funnels as forms for our volcanoes. Be creative with your forms, the dry project will pop off and glue will wash off most things plastic, or with a slightly waxy surface.
Some hints for the mess - wear old clothes, plus we put down an old sheet and did the projects on our basement floor for easier clean-up. I can also recommend doing this outside on a nice day. Of course baths are pretty much a necessary follow-up activity.
More details to come as the project dries...

I remember doing this when I was a kid, and always think I should do it with mine.

Now that I've seen your post, however I think I should just send them over to your house where messy, sticky, time consuming crafts are considered fun and entertaining. I seriously don't think I have the patience for this!

Looks like you guys had a ton of fun. I'm with Jenny, we'll just send out munchkins to your house for any and all time consuming and extremely messy project. Sound like a plan? :}
