"Yours?" I asked. (end of the month, actually)
"No, Martin Luther King's"
"Oh? Did you learn about that at school?"
"Yes. He did things that changed our country."
"What things?"
"I don't know actually."
Now C chimes in. "Why does he have a holiday for his birthday?"
This caught me with an unexpected rush of emotion. My innocent children, accept everyone and know nothing different, thanks to Martin Luther King.
"He did do very important things for our country. He taught people that everyone is a child of God and every person is important."
"People already know that Mom."
"Well a long time ago (I can't believe it is such recent history) people didn't know that. Some people were mean to other people because they had different coloured skin. They wouldn't let them in their restaurants or sit with them on the bus, they couldn't even go to the same school."
"That's ridiculous Mom."
Right then I said a prayer of thanks for this man's life and work.
Watch or read "I Have a Dream" it means a lot. I can dream for my children because of this great, visionary man."We cannot walk alone.
And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead.

I second the first Amen. Here in MT, the kids don't have the day off from school. I am thinking a bit of anti-american..I am hoping that they make up for it and honor him. We will see what they bring home from school today. Loved this post. Thank you so much for sharing.
Amen and thank you so much for the reminder. We don't talk about him that much here in Canada, but we should. His life's work, for equality, is felt here daily.
