Why you should pay more attention at church then your children

"So Jesus doesn't like us, Mom." Whoa, step back 5 minutes...

me - day-dreaming in church
c - "What is enemy Mom?"
me - "Someone who is against you, or doesn't like you."
c - "So Jesus doesn't like us, Mom."
c - "What? Why would you say that?"
c - "I didn't say that, that guy did.." points to speaker
me - looking puzzled
c
- "That's what he said, man is an enemy to God...so Jesus doesn't like us."
me - "stop listening and play with your toys." my brain said. but not out loud.
me - "
of course Jesus likes us, he loves us, we are not his enemy - that's the natural man, which means bad guy." right?

Suggested reading -

“the natural man is an enemy to God” (Mosiah 3:19 - "For the anatural bman is an cenemy to God, and has been from the dfall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he eyields to the enticings of the Holy fSpirit, and gputteth off the hnatural man and becometh a isaint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a jchild, ksubmissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.).
What is the meaning of the phrase “natural man”? (See Alma 42:6–10 and the quotation below.)
  • Elder Bruce R. McConkie said: “After the fall of Adam, man became carnal, sensual, and devilish by nature; he became fallen man. … All accountable persons on earth inherit this fallen state, this probationary state, this state in which worldly things seem desirable to the carnal nature. Being in this state, ‘the natural man is an enemy to God,’ until he conforms to the great plan of redemption and is born again to righteousness. (Mosiah 3:19.) Thus all mankind would remain lost and fallen forever were it not for the atonement of our Lord. (Alma 42:4–14.)”

Hey, why in the world was a 4 year old listening in church anyway?! Don't they know questions like that are not allowed yet because moms like me haven't figured out what to say? Good thing it was your kid not mine. And good job on the answer...see that's why I keep mine coloring, on the floor, in the overflow.

Oooo - gotta love the difficult, thoughtful questions that require intelligent, careful answers. That's a hilarious story!

Kids give us the most interesting perspectives on life. Yours are so cute. We all enjoy them. It is amazing what they hear out of peoples words. One time when my brothers were little my Mom walked by their room and heard Brady tell Tim, "You know what really happened to Jesus don't you? They crossed him out". Yeah, you just never know what they might think.

Kids minds are so amazing. I think you responded the right way. Severin asks some tricky questions too. I usually just give him the big explanation as though he were an adult. I'm fascinated at how he actually understands.
