The Elf and the Dormouse by Oliver Herford
UNDER a toadstool crept a wee Elf,
Out of the rain to shelter himself.
|
Under the toadstool, sound asleep,
Sat a big Dormouse all in a heap.
|
Trembled the wee Elf, frightened and yet |
|
Fearing to fly away lest he get wet.
|
To the next shelter—maybe a mile!
Sudden the wee Elf smiled a wee smile.
|
Tugged till the toadstool toppled in two.
Holding it over him, gaily he flew. |
|
|
Soon he was safe home, dry as could be.
Soon woke the Dormouse—"Good gracious me!
|
"Where is my toadstool?" loud he lamented.
—And that's how umbrellas first were invented. |
I'm so touched, Kristin! You're too kind, but thank you! You didn't put your own link in your comment on my site so I did in the reply so my readers can hook up with your inspiration-ness! My own made up word for your site:) Thanks again! Hope the move went well and the first day school, too!

When I read that poem, I hear it in your Grandmothers voice, if that makes sense. Anyone else? I was just thinking of the same poem, the other day and seeing how much I could remember.
ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable poem. Mushrooms are so fun. They are natures funny little plant.
ReplyDeleteSorry we didn't get to see you guys off at the open house. Every wee Gardner was super sick and thought it better to stay home and not get anyone else sick.
Hope your move back to the "big city" was ok! Landon is going to miss his peeps for sure! I am going to miss the entertaiment in sacrement! Too cute, those little rascels! Hope we can still be bloggy buddies!
What a great poem... and the mushrooms look so cute, don't they? I love Fall!
ReplyDeletewhat a darling post! I love the poem. I had no idea mushrooms were such the item until I read yours and susan's posts. WOW! I am ready to grab some rubber boots and a bucket!
