Soap

This summer, I went to a really great class on soap making. Kerry has been doing this for years and she is so advanced she renders her own tallow/lard!! Not that I'm aspiring to this because well, ewww and I just graduated from vegetarian to preparing meat for my family to eat. I don't think I'll be melting me some back fat anytime soon. However that said, her soap is FABULOUS! Very creamy and moisturizing and good for your skin. The best part is the smell - which is not at all meaty. She uses various ingredients to provide healing properties. I really enjoyed learning about the process and it really opened my eyes to what soap actually is and why this kind of handmade, simple ingredient soap is a better choice than some commerical options.

Favourite new science word of the day - Saponification -The process in which a fatty acid is neutralized with an alkali or base to form a soap.

Thanks Kerry! Below I added some of the links she suggested for recipes...

  3. That's so cool. I used to get soap from her years ago when she first started making it and sold it at Matthew's shop. But I had no clue she did classes!! That would be fun to go to. And what a thing to learn to do.

  4. I have always been curious about making soap. I do eat meat and I don't think I could do the fat thing either:)

  6. That was a fun class. How many times have you been able to incorporate "saponification" in to your everyday conversations?
